“You must be the change you wish to see in the world”
…is the title of a one day workshop on nonviolence which features a variety of stories (fiction, biography, history, wisdom tales) to prompt discussion. Charles Busch, founder of Peace Village, and Cathey Busch, actor and educator, are the presenters.
The five-hour workshop is available depending upon presenter’s schedule. A donation of $1,000 plus mileage is requested.
Session One: We acknowledge the overwhelming reality of violence in our culture and world, explore what is deepest in human nature, and conclude that violence and war are not inevitable. We offer a foundation for a new beginning as peace makers.
Session Two: We consider the root causes of war and its unacceptable casualties (the truth, the innocent, the poor, and our own humanity) and its costs. We also look at the spectre of nuclear weapons.
Session Three: We add our voice to the revolutionary idea of “nonviolence” as the solution to humankind’s habitual reliance on violence. We offer a definition of nonviolence and emphasize its call to action, as well as its practicality. We consider the paradox of gentle power, and document the ignored history of nonviolent action.
Session Four: We conclude by envisioning a place for us as people—so divided into camps of left and right, liberal and conservative, dreamers and realists—to meet and begin anew together. We offer a short list of ways to practice nonviolence. Each practice is modest and basic and promotes nonviolence as a way of life. The point is to become the change we wish to see in the world.
